Eichner named new Disability Law Center Executive Director

Townonline - Thursday, February 23, 2006

The board of directors of the Disability Law Center unanimously voted to appoint Stanley J. Eichner as the new executive director of the law center. He has been the director of litigation at DLC for the past seven years.
According to Robert A. Whitney, DLC Board of Directors' president, "After completing the search process, the board of directors was thrilled to unanimously vote to appoint Stan as our next executive director. The strength and depth of Stan's relationship to the disability community is well known, as is his professional excellence as both an attorney and an advocate on behalf of people with disabilities. I am very confident that Stanley Eichner will move the Disability Law Center forward with his vision of serving the disability community in Massachusetts."
While at DLC, Eichner was lead counsel in the law center's series of agreements with the region's three largest banks, Bank of America (formerly Fleet), Citizens and Sovereign, to ensure that people who are blind or visually impaired have equal access to banking services. He was also co-counsel in the law center's successful suit against the city of Lowell, when that city's newly constructed minor league ballpark improperly relegated all the wheelchair seating to its very last row.
In addition to bringing his nearly 12 years experience as a senior staff attorney and litigation director at the DLC, he spent 10 years as an assistant attorney general at the attorney general's Civil Rights Division. At the attorney general's office, he initiated and directed the Disability Rights Project, which achieved far-reaching disability access settlements with a wide range of private businesses, including MCI, Starwood Hotels and Wendy's.
"Throughout his work as director of the Disability Rights Project, Stan consistently displayed a strategic sophistication, achieving remarkable results. I know that Stan will bring the same type of dynamic leadership to the [executive] directorship of DLC that he consistently displayed as director of our Disability Rights Project," said Scott Harshbarger, former Massachusetts attorney general.
Eichner said, "I'm honored and proud to have been chosen to lead the Disability Law Center. I am excited to continue DLC's mission of ensuring 'the fundamental right of all people with disabilities to participate fully and equally into the social and economic life of Massachusetts.'"
The Disability Law Center is the protection and advocacy agency for Massachusetts.
