Geraldo Rivera - The P&A System The Protection and Advocacy concept was initially triggered by a series of local television news broadcasts, which Geraldo Rivera did for the ABC News affiliate in New York City. Rivera's investigative reporting exposed abuse, neglect and lack of programming at Willowbrook, a state institution for people with mental retardation on Staten Island. These broadcasts lead to the development of the P&A Systems in 1975.

Keith Jones Featured in Film Including Samuel Current DLC Board Treasurer and long time friend, Keith Jones, is featured in Dan Habib's award winning documentary film Including Samuel. Keith, a disability rights activist and hip-hop artist, shares his experiences growing up with a disability. In the film Keith says: “The one thing my family told me was don’t ever let anybody try to limit you or put constraints on you. And I took that literally.” “Keith Jones is one of the most powerful public speakers I’ve ever heard. He weaves humor and his personal experiences together into a unique message: that disability rights is the most important movement of the 21st century,” says Dan Habib. Dan Habib is the director, producer and cinematographer of the documentary that examines the educational and social inclusion of youth with disabilities. The film is built on the efforts of Habib and his family to include 7 year-old Samuel in all facets of school and community. "Four years ago, I sat at my son Samuel’s hospital bedside at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center as he lay in a medically-induced coma. He was four years old and had developed pneumonia from complications following surgery. Samuel’s neurologist, Dr. James Filiano, encouraged me to be a photojournalist in the midst of my fear.” The film also features four other families with varied inclusion experiences, plus interviews with dozens of teachers, young people, parents and disability rights experts. Including Samuel won the 2007 Positive Images in Media award from TASH, an international group committed to the full inclusion of people with disabilities. The film was named “Best Documentary” at the 2007 Somewhat North of Boston Film Festival, and has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered, and in the Washington Post and the Boston Globe.
