The Disability Law Center (DLC) has an immediate opening for a full-time Staff Attorney. DLC is the federally authorized Protection and Advocacy agency for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. DLC’s core mission is to provide legal advocacy on disability issues that promote the fundamental rights of all people with disabilities to participate fully and equally in the social and economic life of Massachusetts.

 

Position:     CLAVC Staff Attorney

Reports To:     Supervising Attorney

Location:     Boston or Northampton Office (Hybrid work schedule)

Wage Class:     Exempt

Union Classification:     Eligible

Responsible For:     This position is part of a statewide endeavor called the Civil

Legal Aid for Victims of Crime (CLAVC) initiative that targets individuals who have been victims of abuse, other familial violence, or criminal conduct. The service area for the job is statewide. The successful applicant will provide legal services and engage in individual advocacy on behalf of crime survivors with disabilities. In addition, the successful applicant will share responsibility with other legal and advocacy staff for providing technical assistance, consultation, outreach and training to clients, family members, and advocates.

Key Duties & Responsibilities: 

  1. Represent crime survivors with disabilities on related civil matters in areas including: housing, employment, healthcare, financial exploitation, government services, abuse prevention and harassment orders, victims’ rights, and disability rights.
  2. Represent public school students with disabilities who have been victims of trauma, bullying and/or harassment.
  3. Analyze statutes, regulations, and agency policies/procedures.
  4. Provide information and short-term assistance to DLC clients, including providing verbal and written advice
  5. Engage in various non-case related activities including community outreach and task force/committee participation.
  6. Prepare written materials and conduct trainings for the education and training of individuals with disabilities, community partners , professionals, and others consistent with DLC’s priorities;
  7. Work in collaboration with DLC colleagues, staff of legal aid programs and staff of disability advocacy programs throughout the Commonwealth to address systemic barriers facing the disability community.
  8. Engage in other tasks and projects that further DLC’s mission and operations.
  9. Comply with obligations to compile information, engage in accurate record-keeping, and prepare activities reports.

Qualifications

  1. Must possess a JD;
  2. Be a member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar or be eligible to become a member within a reasonable time after employment, and maintain such standing throughout employment with DLC;
  3. Two (2) years or more of legal experience preferred;
  4. Ability to work efficiently, independently, and collaboratively;
  5. Ability to occasionally work long hours and/or weekends when necessary to adequately perform job duties;
  6. Ability to communicate effectively, with particular emphasis on written communication;
  7. Ability to analyze facts and pertinent legal authority and develop creative solutions;
  8. Ability to work effectively with a record-keeping database and maintain up to date and accurate time records.

Desired Attributes

  1. Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity to or experience working with people with disabilities or experience as a person with a disability.
  2. Experience working with people who may have experienced poverty, trauma or discrimination and/or people from historically excluded communities.
  3. Demonstrated interest and commitment to practicing public interest law with a social justice lens.
  4. Experience working in a legal services, non-profit or public interest environment.
  5. Demonstrated ability to communicate in ASL, Spanish, or other non-English language.

Compensation
